Robert Louis Stevenson: An Unlikely Mr Christmas
11th August 2023 He may well be one of Scotland's best-known literary treasures, but who would have thought that Robert Louis Stevenson had such an interesting connection to Christmas? One of the most prolific and well-known authors of the Victorian era, Stevenson was beloved for novels such as Treasure Island, Kidnapped and The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. But he was to turn his attention to the festive season not once but twice in his career, with the 1887 thriller novella The Misadventures of John Nicholson: A Christmas Story and his reflective yuletide essay A Christmas Sermon in the same year. Neither are among his best-recognised works, and yet they give a fascinating insight into Christmas in an era when the festive season was little celebrated in Scotland. Just don't mention black bun - one of the country's most ubiquitous Christmas treats - as Stevenson famously couldn't stand it! Stevenson's Christmas writing, and many other Scottish literary connections, can be found in Scotland's Christmas: Festive Celebrations, Traditions and Customs in Scotland from Samhain to Still Game by Thomas A. Christie and Murray Cook. The book is currently available for pre-order. For more details about participating online retailers, please visit our Scotland's Christmas page. |
