Celebrating the Festivities with Mel Croucher's Christmas Cracker
19th December 2025 In this festive Extremis Publishing Podcast special, a true pioneer of British microcomputing has once again taken to the airwaves. Mel Croucher, the visionary creator of Deus Ex Machina and one of the most distinctive voices of the 1980s home computer scene, has revived his irreverent end-of-the-year “address to the nation” as Mel Croucher’s Christmas Cracker. In the glory days of Crash and other stalwart computer magazines, Mel’s seasonal missives arrived as crackling cover-mounted cassette tapes, equal parts satire, philosophy and digital mischief. Now, in a pleasingly circular twist of technological fate, the message returns via podcast: still as provocative, still as witty, and still reminding us that computing was once as much about imagination and rebellion as it was about machine code. To hear the podcast, please visit our podcast page or our YouTube channel at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cv1QBugLSak |

Many Thanks to Stirling King Street Aparthotel
15th December 2025 Huge thanks to everyone at King Street Aparthotel in Stirling for so kindly hosting Dr Tom Christie's presentation 'A Seriously Groovy Movie Christmas' on Friday 12th December in aid of Forthgiving, the community philanthropic trust serving the Forth Valley of Scotland. Taking place in the hotel's WorKing Flexispaces, its state of the art co-working and meeting space, the presentation covered the weird and wonderful Christmas movies of the 1960s and '70s - a period that was to be both boldly experimental and often bizarrely surreal. As well as a Q&A session and book-signing, the hotel had also kindly arranged festive food for the attendees - including hot chocolate with marshmallows, and many other Christmas goodies. A charitable collection in support of Forthgiving also took place after the event. We'd like to thank everyone at King Street Aparthotel for having organised such a fun event in support of a good cause, especially Managing Director Neil Munday and House Manager Laura Chalkley. It was greatly appreciated by all. |

Remembering Dr Elspeth King
3rd November 2025 It is with much sadness that we have learned of the recent passing of social historian, author and museum curator Dr Elspeth King. Elspeth was always a great friend to all of us at Extremis Publishing, even from the earliest days of the company, and was a stalwart supporter of both our business and our authors. Elspeth held high-profile curatorial roles at the People's Palace in Glasgow and Abbot House in Dunfermline before taking up the Directorship of the Stirling Smith Art Gallery and Museum between 1994 and 2018. She and Extremis co-founder Tom Christie worked together at the Smith between 2006 and 2007, and became firm friends thereafter. Elspeth received the honour of a Doctor of the University degree from the University of Stirling in 2005. Elspeth was a prolific author, with her many works including The People's Palace and Glasgow Green (1991), The Wallace Muse (2005), Old Stirling (2009), and A History of Stirling in 100 Objects (2011), amongst several others. Her contribution to Scotland's cultural life is incalculable, and she will be greatly missed. |
